Hoegaarden is the original Belgian witbier, named after the village in Flemish Brabant where monks first brewed wheat beer in 1445. The style had all but disappeared when local milkman Pierre Celis revived it in 1966, and Hoegaarden has since become the world's best-known white beer.
It is brewed with wheat and barley and spiced with coriander and orange peel, giving it a naturally cloudy appearance and a distinctive, refreshing character. It pours a pale, hazy white gold with a soft, frothy head. The aroma is bright and aromatic, with citrus and gentle spice, while the palate is light, smooth and slightly sweet with a zesty, refreshing finish.
Serve ice cold in Hoegaarden's heavy hexagonal glass, with a wedge of orange or lemon if you like. It pairs beautifully with mussels, seafood, salads, goat's cheese and lightly spiced Asian dishes.
