A Midwinter Night's Dram is High West's most anticipated annual release, and Act 9 marks the 2021 edition of this seasonal blend. Founded in Park City, Utah, High West built this expression around its Rendezvous Rye, taking the base blend of straight rye whiskeys through an extended finishing process reserved for this limited yearly release.
The blend combines two straight rye whiskeys, one distilled by High West itself at an 80% rye and 20% malted rye mash bill, the other a 95% rye and 5% malted barley recipe. Together they deliver a rye-forward profile layered with dark fig, blackberry, dried fruit and warm baking spice, with the port finish lending sweetness and depth alongside classic rye spiciness.
Following maturation in new charred American oak, the rye blend is finished for an additional one to two years in both ruby and tawny port casks made from French oak. This extended port finishing is what sets each annual Act apart, rounding out the whiskey with notes of stewed fruit, toffee and oak spice.
