Nestled deep in the primeval forests of Japan's Southern Alps near Mount Kaikomagatake, the Hakushu Distillery is one of the highest-altitude whisky distilleries in the world. Opened by Suntory in 1973, Hakushu is known as "The Fresh" Japanese whisky, shaped by the cool mountain air, pure alpine water, and serene forest surroundings. The Distiller's Reserve showcases a marriage of carefully selected single malts, balancing delicate herbal freshness with a whisper of smoke.
Pale golden in the glass, the nose is refreshing and herbaceous — green herbs, fresh mint, cucumber, and a delicate waft of sweet peat smoke. The palate is light and elegant, with green apple, yuzu citrus, spearmint, and gentle oak spice underpinned by a barely-there smokiness, finishing clean, cool, and gently smoky with a lingering herbal freshness.
Best appreciated neat or on the rocks to savour its delicate complexity. Also exceptional as a Highball — serve over ice with chilled soda water and a lemon twist for the quintessential Japanese whisky experience.
