The Glenturret 7 Years Old Peat Smoked is made at The Glenturret, a small Highland distillery on the banks of the Turret Burn near Crieff in Perthshire, which traces distilling on its site back to 1763 and is widely described as Scotland's oldest working distillery. The distillery still works by hand, with mashing done manually and a very small production run each year, and its whiskies are built by whisky maker Bob Dalgarno. Although Glenturret is best known for unpeated malt, peat has been part of the distillery's story since the 1800s, and this release was the first in the core range to put smoke at the centre.
This is a gently peated Highland single malt rather than a heavily medicinal one. Expect wisps of soft peat smoke over sweet vanilla and citrus fruit, with ginger and nutmeg spice, a suggestion of sea salt and tempered oak on a fruity, softly smoky finish. The balance of orchard fruit sweetness against restrained smoke makes it an approachable starting point for drinkers new to peated whisky, while retaining the creamy, fruit-driven house character Glenturret is known for.
The spirit is matured for seven years in a combination of American oak sherry seasoned casks and smoky refill casks. The American oak builds the confectionery sweetness and vanilla drawn from the new make spirit, while the refill wood carries the peat smoke character and adds a layer of gentle spice. It is released annually, with each yearly bottling drawn from the casks reaching maturity that season.
