Fernet-Branca is the iconic Italian amaro, a dark and intensely herbal bitter produced by Fratelli Branca in Milan. First created in 1845 by the herbalist Bernardino Branca, it has been made to the same closely guarded family recipe for six generations, and remains one of the most recognisable digestifs in the world.
The blend draws on twenty-seven herbs, roots and spices sourced from across the globe, including myrrh, rhubarb, chamomile, cardamom, saffron, gentian and aloe, with the finished spirit rested in oak. The result is boldly bitter and aromatic, with cooling notes of mint and eucalyptus, earthy herbal depth and warming spice, all carried through to a long, dry finish.
Traditionally savoured neat as an after-dinner digestif, Fernet-Branca is equally prized by bartenders as a complex cocktail ingredient. In Argentina it is famously mixed with cola to make the much-loved Fernet con coca, showing just how versatile this distinctive Italian classic can be.
