Graippeaux is a single plot Chenin Blanc from Etienne Bodet's holdings at La Durandiere in Montreuil-Bellay, made from a massale selection of vines around seventy years old. The plot sits on hard Jurassic limestone, a rarity in Saumur where soft tuffeau is the rule, and that harder rock gives the wine its distinctive tension and salinity.
Raising is patient and deliberately low key: twenty two months in barrels of varying sizes between 228 and 600 litres, all of them one or two wines old, so there is texture and breadth without any obvious wood character. Expect ripe pear and quince, dried apricot, camomile and beeswax, wrapped around a firm chalky core with a long, dry, mineral finish.
Bodet founded the estate in 2020 after taking on a few plots from the family property run by his father Antoine. He trained in oenology at Reims and worked with Sylvain Pataille, Domaine Guiberteau, Clos Rougeard, SICAVAC in Sancerre and Champagne Pierre Gerbais before starting out on his own. Serve with scallops, roast pork, or a mature Comte.
