En Novalet is Domaine Rolet's single-site Chardonnay from L'Etoile, a small Jura appellation devoted entirely to white wines and named after the star-shaped fossils found in its soils. The estate's 3.5 hectare parcel sits on a slope in the village of Planoiseau, where grey Lias marl is topped with silty scree rich in these tiny marine fossils known as pentacrines.
Unlike the oxidative Jura styles, this is a topped-up Chardonnay, fermented in barrique with a proportion of native yeast and then aged for around a year in barrel before bottling. It is tight, racy and mineral-driven, with flint, green apple, lemon pith and crushed stone, white flower notes, a fine texture and a lingering saline finish.
Domaine Rolet was founded in Arbois in 1942 by Désiré Rolet and has grown into one of the Jura's larger family-run estates, with around 65 hectares of vines spread across Arbois, Côtes du Jura, L'Etoile and Château-Chalon. Since 2018 the domaine has been in new hands, with farming moving towards organic practices, no herbicides or pesticides, and every bunch picked by hand.
Vintages may vary. Email us at hello@barrelandbatch.com.au if you would like confirmation.
