Bourgogne Côte d'Or is a relatively recent appellation, created to separate wines grown on the Côte d'Or slopes themselves from the broader regional Bourgogne category. In practice it means Chardonnay from the same band of limestone that produces the great villages of the Côte de Beaune, and in the hands of a Meursault grower with parcels scattered up and down that slope it delivers a good deal more than its modest rank suggests.
The wine is bright and finely drawn, with citrus, white peach and green apple on the nose and a gentle nutty note behind. The palate is fresh and cleanly structured, more about tension and drive than weight, with a chalky mineral edge running through to a dry, quietly persistent finish.
Philippe Bouzereau is the ninth generation of his family to grow vines in Meursault, and he has run the 18 hectare estate since 2006 alongside his brother Charles. The domaine is based at the Château de Cîteaux in the heart of the village, built within a former Cistercian vineyard enclosure and still using vaulted cellars laid down by the monks in the thirteenth century. Fruit is picked by hand, pressed gently and fermented with indigenous yeasts.
