Les Pucelles lies just north of Bâtard-Montrachet and Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet, sharing their altitude and soils, and is often regarded as the finest Premier Cru in Puligny-Montrachet. Domaine Leflaive farms just over three hectares here across three parcels, known as Le Clos du Meix, La Grande and La Petite, with vines planted between 1954 and 1985 on southeast-facing clay-limestone at around 230 metres.
The Leflaive family settled in Puligny in 1717, and the domaine as it exists today was assembled by Joseph Leflaive between 1910 and 1930. The vineyards are farmed biodynamically, certified by Biodyvin since 1998, and hand-harvested with careful sorting.
The 2023 vintage was abundant and well balanced. After a mild winter and a cool, wet spring, flowering was ideal, and a mid-August heat spike drove ripening quickly to a harvest that began on 29 August, with picking halted at 2pm each day to avoid the heat. The wine was fermented in oak casks, a quarter of them new, then aged for 12 months in barrel and six months in tank.
Pucelles is prized for its finesse, with floral and citrus aromatics, fine mineral drive and a long, refined finish that can rival its Grand Cru neighbours.
