Morey-Saint-Denis is the Raphet family's home village, and this is their village cuvee from the commune they have farmed since the 1920s. Sitting between Gevrey-Chambertin and Chambolle-Musigny on the Cote de Nuits, Morey has always borrowed a little from both: the structure of one and the perfume of the other.
The wine is pale in the glass, as all the domaine's reds are, and then surprises with the concentration behind it. Red cherry, redcurrant and raspberry lead, joined by rose, wet stone and a savoury note of forest floor. The palate is fine boned and precise, tannins silky, acidity clean, the finish long and mineral.
Gerard Raphet is the third generation of his family on these plots and now works with his daughter Marion. Fruit comes from mature Pinot Noir vines, some of them over a hundred years old, and the winemaking stays deliberately hands off: light extraction, around fifteen per cent new oak, no fining and no filtration. Good with duck, veal, game birds or a mushroom risotto.
