Domaine Gauby Jasse Blanc 2024 750ml
La Jasse is Domaine Gauby's skin contact Muscat, and it is one of the more distinctive things the estate makes. The fruit comes from schist and limestone soils in the hills around Calce in Roussillon, where altitude and Pyrenean winds keep an aromatic variety like Muscat lively rather than blowsy.
The bunches go into stainless steel whole and macerate on their skins for up to three weeks, fermenting on indigenous yeasts, before a slow press judged to suit the vintage. The wine then spends around seven months resting in concrete tanks and large wooden vessels. The Gauby family farms organically and biodynamically across roughly forty five hectares and has planted trees and hedges throughout the vineyards to rebuild the ecosystem around the vines.
The extended skin contact turns Muscat into something quite unexpected. Kumquat and orange blossom lead the aromatics, while the palate brings lemongrass, hay and a warm spiced note, with genuine structure underneath and a dry, refreshing finish. Serve it lightly chilled with spiced food, charcuterie or grilled vegetables.
