Clos de la Belle Marguerite is a single-site Côte de Nuits-Villages from Domaine Fourrier, the respected Gevrey-Chambertin estate run by Jean-Marie Fourrier since 1994. The Côte de Nuits-Villages appellation covers red wines from villages at the northern and southern ends of the Côte de Nuits, and a named bottling like this one offers a focused taste of a single place.
Domaine Fourrier is built on old vines, many planted between the 1930s and 1950s and maintained through massal selection. Herbicides were abandoned in the mid-1990s, yields are controlled by hard winter pruning and the fruit is sorted rigorously in the vineyard.
In the cellar Jean-Marie, who trained with Henri Jayer and at Domaine Drouhin in Oregon, keeps intervention to a minimum. Each parcel is vinified separately with native yeasts after a short cold soak, extracted by hand punch-downs, moved by gravity to barrel and aged on fine lees with no more than 20% new oak. Expect a pure, transparent Pinot Noir with bright red fruit and fine-grained tannins.
