Domaine Faiveley was founded at Nuits-Saint-Georges in 1825 and is run today by the seventh generation, Erwan Faiveley and his sister Eve. Mercurey is the heart of the domaine's Côte Chalonnaise holdings, and this old vine bottling is drawn from around twenty separate plots, mostly clay-limestone, with vines planted between the early 1960s and the early 1980s.
Twelve months in French oak, only about a tenth of it new, keeps the focus squarely on fruit. The colour is a deep ruby and the bouquet is intensely aromatic, full of ripe red berries with a spicy lift and a whisper of vanilla from the barrel. The attack is smooth and fruit driven, the tannins silky, and the wine carries more structure than its village status might suggest.
An excellent way into red Burgundy at this level. Serve it with roast pork, charcuterie, duck or mushroom dishes, and it will hold nicely in the cellar for several years.
