The 1er Chapitre sits in the heart of the village, surrounded by a stone wall, lower on the slope. Soils are mostly clay-based. Historically, this plot was cared for by monks attached to the Saint-Vincent cathedral (also the patron saint of winemakers), established in the fifth century. From vines planted in 1958, it’s a graceful and silky Rully from Dureuil this year.
The 2022 Rully Rouge Chapitre 1er Cru comes from a parcel adjacent to the whites. The nose has one of the best amongst the reds: raspberry, wild strawberry, touches of loam and sea spray. Wonderful definition. The palate is well-balanced, with fine tannins framing the intense black cherry and bilberry notes, quite peppery towards the finish. A bit of reduction is at play, but it will come through that. Excellent
