Domaine de Trévallon Rouge 2023 750ml

Domaine de Trévallon is one of the singular estates of southern France. Set in the rocky limestone hills of the Alpilles in Provence, it was carved out of scrubland by Eloi Dürrbach in the 1970s and is now run by the next generation of the family. Because the blend leans so heavily on Cabernet Sauvignon, a variety the local appellation rules do not favour, the wine is bottled under the IGP Alpilles designation rather than a Provence appellation.

The blend is an even split of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, fermented spontaneously with whole bunches and matured on lees in foudres and older oak barrels for at least two years. There is nothing rushed about it, and very little intervention along the way.

The nose is powerful and elegant at once, with raspberry and fresh cherry, white pepper and liquorice, and the wild thyme, black olive and garrigue character that marks wines of this landscape. The palate is robust but balanced, with ripe tannins, a smoky mineral salinity and blackcurrant depth running through a long and persistent finish. Decant it, and serve with lamb, game or anything off the grill.
