Domaine Auguste Clape is the legendary Cornas estate whose late namesake founder is credited with almost single-handedly transforming Cornas from a largely négociant-sold appellation into the estate-focused cru it is today. The family farms around 8.5 hectares across the steep granite hillsides of Cornas and neighbouring Saint-Péray, with the estate now run by Auguste's son Pierre and grandson Olivier following Auguste's death in 2018.
A Saint-Péray white typically blended from around 80% Marsanne and 20% Roussanne, grown on south-facing granite slopes just south of Cornas. Expect a fine, mineral white with aromas of white flowers, ripe pear, honeycomb and mirabelle plum, carried by a touch of flinty gunflint reduction. The palate is elegant and well-defined, with a creamy texture balanced by bright, saline freshness and a long, pure finish.
Hand-harvested on steep terraces. Winemaking is traditional and minimalist, with long élevage in old foudres of 30–50 years of age, preserving the purity and restraint that defines the Clape style.
