Domaine Armand Rousseau in Gevrey-Chambertin was built up by Armand Rousseau in the early twentieth century and is today led by his grandson Eric Rousseau with Eric's daughter Cyrielle. The estate was among the first in Burgundy to bottle its own wines and is renowned for its holdings across the great grands crus of Gevrey.
Chambertin is the domaine's flagship, and Rousseau is one of the largest owners of this historic grand cru, which sits midway up the slope south of Chambertin-Clos de Bèze on limestone and marl soils. The Pinot Noir is hand-harvested and sorted, and the grand cru wines are aged in new French oak, which the concentrated fruit absorbs over time.
Rousseau's Chambertin is known for its power and depth combined with remarkable finesse, showing dark cherry, blackberry, spice and earthy, mineral notes over a firm, silky structure. 2016 was a year of spring frost and reduced yields in parts of Burgundy, but the fruit that remained ripened well, giving reds of purity, freshness and intensity. This is a wine made for long cellaring.
