Les Cotes au Vent means the windy hillside, and it is the Blanc de Noirs in the Dhondt-Grellet range. It draws on a piece of Champagne history that often gets overlooked: the villages of Cuis and Grauves, deep in Chardonnay country on the Cote des Blancs, have always carried a meaningful proportion of Pinot Meunier in their vineyards.
Working red grapes in this corner of Champagne produces something quite distinct from either a Cote des Blancs Chardonnay or a Montagne de Reims Pinot Noir. There is more flesh and red fruit here, think white cherry, redcurrant, orchard fruit and a savoury note of orange peel and toasted grain, but the chalk beneath keeps the whole thing lean, saline and tightly drawn.
Extra brut dosage suits it, leaving a dry, mineral finish with a gently grippy texture. Champagne Dhondt-Grellet was founded in 1986 at Flavigny just outside Avize by Eric Dhondt and Edith Grellet, and is now in the hands of their son Adrien, named Winemaker of the Year in the 2017 Trophees Champenois. Good with charcuterie, roast pork, duck or grilled fish.
