Domaine Denis Mortet is one of the most celebrated names of the Cote de Nuits, based in Gevrey-Chambertin and today run by Arnaud Mortet alongside his mother and sister. The estate is renowned for richly detailed Pinot Noir, and this Marsannay comes from the Les Longeroies vineyard, a parcel of old vines on reddish marl over limestone that is widely regarded as among the finest in the appellation and a candidate for future premier cru status.
Made with a generous proportion of whole bunches and matured in barrel, it is a Pinot Noir of depth and finesse. Expect brambly black fruit lifted by a savoury, forest-floor character, with a medium-bodied palate framed by fine-grained tannins and a long, mineral finish. There is both immediate appeal and the structure to age.
Decant young bottles and serve at cool room temperature. It pairs handsomely with roast duck, game, lamb, mushroom dishes and washed-rind cheeses.
