The Hautes-Côtes de Nuits is the high country behind the famous slope, a cooler and more exposed landscape of small valleys and hilltop villages where vineyards sit several hundred metres above those of the Côte proper. White wines from up here have always been the fresher, more angular alternative to the Côte de Beaune, and warming seasons have made them a good deal more interesting than they once were.
Lemon, green apple and white blossom fill the nose, with a clean chalky note behind. The palate is crisp and unfussy, with bright acidity, a light stony texture through the middle and a dry, refreshing finish. It is a wine that asks nothing of the cellar and a great deal less of the wallet than its neighbours.
David Duband is based at Chevannes, right in the heart of this high country. He took on the family domaine in 1991, turned the vineyards over to organic farming by 2006, and applies the same careful hand picking and sorting to his regional wines as to the grand crus at the other end of the range.
