Clarendon Hills was founded in 1990 by Roman Bratasiuk, a biochemist turned winemaker who became the first to bottle single-vineyard Grenache from Blewitt Springs in McLaren Vale. The estate remains devoted to expressing individual old-vine sites with minimal intervention.
This Grenache comes from a single vineyard of gnarly, dry-grown bush vines planted in the 1940s in the deep, free-draining sands of Blewitt Springs, laced with pebbled ironstone, quartz and shale. The south to south-east facing site sits around 230 metres above sea level. Hand-picked fruit is fermented with wild yeast, matured in older French oak and bottled on site without fining or filtration.
The wine shows red and black cherry, blood orange, musk and violets, with notes of crushed rock, iodine and baking spice over a fine, talc-like texture. It is well suited to a charcuterie plate.
Vintages may vary. Email us at hello@barrelandbatch.com.au if you would like confirmation.
