Château Troplong Mondot occupies the highest ground in Saint-Émilion, on the Mondot hill at the eastern end of the limestone plateau, with views across the whole appellation. The estate runs to around 43 hectares and has been owned by the insurance group SCOR since 2017, since when the vineyard, cellars and buildings have all been reworked.
Thick clay sits over deep limestone here, with fragments of flint through the soil, and the plantings are dominated by Merlot with small parcels of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The wine is matured for sixteen to twenty four months in French oak barrels, on average around 65 per cent of them new.
Troplong Mondot is generous but increasingly poised. Black cherry, plum and cassis come with liquorice, cocoa, warm spice and a cool limestone freshness underneath, and the tannins are ripe and enveloping. It drinks well after a few years and keeps for three decades in strong vintages.
