Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is a Second Growth of the 1855 Classification, occupying a stretch of Günzian gravel in the south of Pauillac that runs down towards Saint-Julien. It has belonged to the Rouzaud family of Champagne Louis Roederer since 2007, and parts of the vineyard are now farmed organically and biodynamically.
Around 89 hectares are planted over clay and limestone subsoils. Cabernet Sauvignon leads the blend, but the estate has long used a generous share of Merlot alongside parcels of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, which is a large part of its character. The wine is matured in French oak barrels with a high proportion of new wood.
Long known as the most perfumed of the Pauillac classed growths, Pichon Comtesse offers cassis and dark cherry with violets, cedar, liquorice and fine spice over a silky, seamless palate. The tannins are firm but beautifully polished, and the wine ages for decades.
