Château Pichon Longueville Baron is a Second Growth of the 1855 Classification, its turreted château one of the landmarks of the road through Pauillac. The estate was bought by the AXA insurance group at the end of the 1980s, and the replanting and rebuilding that followed restored it to the front rank of the commune.
The vineyard covers around 73 hectares, with the core parcels on the gravel plateau opposite the château. Cabernet Sauvignon makes up close to two thirds of the plantings, with Merlot taking most of the balance and small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The wine is matured for about eighteen months in French oak, around 70 per cent of it new.
Pichon Baron is among the most powerful wines of Pauillac. Dense cassis and black plum come with cedar, graphite, tobacco and dark spice, framed by muscular but polished tannins and a long finish. It has the structure to age for several decades.
