Château Pavie Macquin sits on the clay and limestone plateau above the southern slopes of Saint-Émilion, next to Troplong Mondot and above Pavie. It carries the name of Albert Macquin, the nineteenth century grower who pioneered grafting onto American rootstock and helped save the region's vineyards after phylloxera.
The vineyard is worked along biodynamic lines, with the aim of drawing minerality and freshness from the limestone. Merlot makes up the great majority of the plantings, with Cabernet Franc and a little Cabernet Sauvignon adding structure and lift, and the wine is raised on its lees for sixteen to eighteen months in French oak.
The style balances power with tension. Dark cherry, blackberry and plum are lifted by violets, graphite and a chalky mineral line, with dense but finely grained tannins and a long, savoury finish. It benefits from a few years in bottle and evolves gracefully for fifteen years and beyond.
