Château Mont-Redon is one of the largest and most historic estates in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, perched on the high plateau north-west of the village where deep beds of the appellation's famous galets roulés cover sand and red clay. The classique red is a traditional multi-varietal Châteauneuf blend anchored by Grenache, with substantial Syrah, Mourvèdre and a supporting cast drawn from the appellation's permitted varieties.
The 2023 is youthful, sappy and structured. Floral lift and kirsch sit alongside sweet spice, liquorice and a touch of toasty oak, with a fleshy core of Amarena cherry fruit at the heart of the palate. Tannins are firm but ripe and the finish is long, lifted and savoury, suggesting plenty of bottle life ahead.
Best decanted in its youth or cellared for the medium term; partner with herb-crusted lamb, beef Provençal, wild game or a slow-cooked daube.
