Château Léoville-Barton is a 2ème Grand Cru Classé of Saint-Julien and one of the great classical names of the Médoc. Owned by the Barton family since 1826, the estate is renowned for its traditional Cabernet-led style and extraordinary ageing potential. The 2005 — one of the all-time great Bordeaux vintages — is a blend of roughly 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Merlot with a touch of Cabernet Franc.
Inky purple-black in the glass, the wine unfurls a sensational perfume of charcoal, burning embers, underbrush, cedar, crème de cassis and subtle toasty oak. The palate is full-bodied and powerful, with polished dark berry fruit, graphite, leather and smoke framed by deep, muscular tannins and admirable purity. This is a big, strapping Saint-Julien with real grip and staying power.
Still youthful more than two decades on, the 2005 Léoville-Barton has decades of cellar life ahead — anticipated maturity stretches to 2065. A benchmark Left Bank Bordeaux for the cellar.
