Château Haut-Batailley is a Fifth Growth of the 1855 Classification in the south of Pauillac, neighbouring Batailley and the Bages plateau. The estate was bought by the Cazes family in 2017, since when the vineyard and the cellars have been steadily reworked.
Around 40 hectares of gravel soils are planted to roughly 62 per cent Cabernet Sauvignon and 36 per cent Merlot with a little Petit Verdot. The wine is matured for about twelve months in French oak barrels, a high proportion of them new.
The style is svelte and elegant by Pauillac standards. Blackcurrant and dark cherry are framed by cedar, graphite and fine spice, with supple tannins and a fresh, lifted finish. It can be enjoyed relatively young and will hold and improve over ten to twenty years.
