Château Guiraud is one of the great Sauternes estates, classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 Classification. The 128-hectare property — planted 65% Sémillon and 35% Sauvignon Blanc — has been farmed organically since 1996 and in 2011 became the first 1855 Grand Cru Classé estate in any appellation to receive Organic Farming certification. The estate is today run under the leadership of Sandrine Garbay, following ownership by Robert Peugeot and three wine-makers (Olivier Bernard, Stephan Von Neipperg and Xavier Planty) since 2006.
A blend of around 65% Sémillon and 35% Sauvignon Blanc (an unusually high proportion of Sauvignon for the appellation). The 2009 Guiraud is regarded as one of the finest recent vintages of the estate — medium-gold with an expressive bouquet of jasmine, peach blossom, dried mango, honey, baked pineapple and preserved ginger. The palate is concentrated and layered, with pure botrytised fruit balanced by a vibrant, ginger-tinged acidity and a long, lingering finish. Half bottle format.
Hand-harvested by multiple sortings, picking only the grapes most affected by noble rot. Fermentation and ageing take place in oak barrels, giving the wine its signature complexity and texture.
