Château d'Yquem is Sauternes' only Premier Cru Supérieur — sitting above even the First Growths of the 1855 Classification — and arguably the most celebrated dessert wine in the world. The 2016 is a classic blend of 75% Sémillon and 25% Sauvignon Blanc, picked berry-by-berry between late September and early November as noble rot took hold following drought-like summer conditions.
Presented in a 375ml half bottle, the wine shows a pale lemon-gold hue and leaps from the glass with honeyed apricot, pineapple, green mango, crushed rocks, candied ginger, coriander seed and citrus peel, lifted by orange blossom. The palate is tightly wound, vibrant and refreshing, layer upon layer of minerals and spices finishing with epic poise and persistence. Residual sugar of around 135 g/L is carried effortlessly by searing natural acidity.
A wine of extraordinary finesse and decades of cellaring ahead — expected to peak between 2040 and 2045 and drink beautifully well beyond.
