Château Cheval Blanc lies on the western edge of Saint-Émilion, right against the Pomerol boundary, and is one of the most singular properties in Bordeaux. Its roughly 39 hectares sit on an unusual patchwork of gravel, fine clay and sand, and the estate has been owned by Bernard Arnault and the Frère family since 1998.
What sets Cheval Blanc apart is the leading role of Cabernet Franc, which makes up around half of the plantings alongside Merlot and a small share of Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyard is farmed as a mosaic of individual parcels, each vinified separately, and the wine is matured for sixteen to eighteen months in new French oak.
The result manages to be both opulent and delicate. Red and black berries, violets and plum sit over tobacco, cedar and a fine mineral thread, the texture is silky and seamless, and the finish is remarkably long. It is drinkable young for a wine of this stature yet ages for decades.
