From Cantalapiedra Viticultores, a family domaine in La Seca at the heart of the Rueda appellation in Castilla y León, Spain. The Cantalapiedra family have farmed vines here for generations, with Heliodoro planting his first vineyard in 1949. Today his grandson Manuel works alongside his father Isaac across roughly 20 hectares of organically farmed vineyards, with biodynamic practices in vineyard and cellar. The family bottled their first wines in 2014 and now release under the Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León designation, outside the Rueda DO, in order to make Verdejo their own way: late-picked, wild-fermented, low intervention.
Majuelo La Otea is the family's flagship Verdejo, sourced from a pre-phylloxera plot in Villanueva de Duero with ungrafted vines well over a century old, planted on poor sandy soils close to the Duero River. Yields are tiny (around 500 to 600 kg per hectare), giving a deep, structured Verdejo with stone fruit, dried herbs, honeyed citrus and chamomile, framed by a savoury, saline palate and a long, refreshingly bitter finish.
The whole bunches are pressed directly into 600 litre French oak barrels, where the wine ferments with native yeasts and ages on the fine lees for around 11 months, followed by further ageing in a combination of oak and stainless steel before bottling unfined and unfiltered.
