Bunnahabhain 12 Year Old Cask Strength 2025 Edition is the latest release in the distillery's cask strength series, which began in 2021 after guests were inspired by tasting whisky straight from the cask in Warehouse 9. It is an unpeated Islay single malt, bottled at full natural strength without dilution, non-chill filtered and with natural colour.
The whisky was matured mainly in second fill Oloroso sherry casks, with some first fill and refill casks added for extra layers, all resting in Bunnahabhain's coastal warehouses where the salty sea air slows maturation. The distillery describes this edition as more structured, less sweet and more coastal than earlier releases, favouring precision and restraint over a heavy sherry influence.
The nose shows dried apricot, soft brine and toasted hazelnut. The palate brings golden sultanas, malted barley, gentle spice, a touch of light tobacco and sea spray, leading to a long, savoury finish of delicate oak, drying spice and a hint of salt. Bunnahabhain suggests tasting it neat, then adding a few drops of water to open up the aromas, or letting it develop in the glass over time. It is presented in a gift box.
