Biondi-Santi is the family estate credited with creating Brunello di Montalcino. In the late 19th century Ferruccio Biondi Santi selected and propagated a particular clone of Sangiovese Grosso at Tenuta Il Greppo, just outside Montalcino, and produced the wine that would become the benchmark for the appellation. Generations of the family upheld a strictly traditional, long-lived style that remains the estate's signature.
The Brunello is made entirely from Sangiovese grown on the Greppo estate and aged for around three years in large Slavonian oak casks before further time in bottle. The approach favours structure, acidity and finesse over overt ripeness or oak, so the wines are famously reserved in youth and built to evolve over decades.
With time in bottle, this Brunello shows red cherry, dried rose and subtle herbs on the nose, with notes of tobacco, earthy spice and a delicate touch of vanilla. The palate is fine and harmonious, rich yet poised, carried by firm, refined tannins and fresh acidity to a long, elegant finish.
Decant before serving and pair with roast lamb, braised beef, wild game or aged pecorino.
