Bicknell FC is the personal label of David Bicknell — Oakridge's long-serving senior winemaker and 2017 Gourmet Traveller Winemaker of the Year — and his wife Nicole Harris. The focus is singular: only Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from premium Yarra Valley sites.
The 2024 Applecross Chardonnay is drawn from a P58-clone block planted in 1984 at the historic St Andrews vineyard in the north-west of the Yarra. Fruit is whole-bunch pressed straight to a mix of puncheons and hogsheads for natural fermentation, with malolactic fermentation blocked entirely. Eleven months on lees build texture without sacrificing tension or drive.
Pure and energetic, it opens with a hit of struck-flint reduction that gives way to lime zest, white peach, white flowers and subtle toasted-nut notes. The palate is rich and full yet focused, with lively acidity and a long, mineral-edged finish. A serious Yarra Chardonnay in a distinctly taut, contemporary style.
