Barbaresso is a classic anise-led ouzo with roots that trace back to Smyrna, where the Vlassis family first crafted their signature spirit from grape must flavoured with currants, fennel and traditional aromatics. After George Vlassis relocated to Melbourne in the early 1920s, the recipe travelled with him, and the brand has been produced in Australia ever since while staying true to its old-world Greek style.
On the nose, expect the unmistakable lift of aniseed alongside hints of fennel and warm spice. The palate is rich and rounded with a clean, bright character, layered notes of licorice, herbs and a subtle citrus edge, leading to a smooth, lingering finish.
Best served deeply chilled as an aperitif, either neat over ice or topped with a splash of cold water to bring out the trademark opalescent louche. A timeless match for mezze, grilled seafood and long Mediterranean afternoons.
