Bannockburn Vineyards was established in 1974 by Stuart Hooper, who planted Pinot Noir and Chardonnay on the plains north west of Geelong out of a lifelong love of Burgundy. The estate is still in family hands, with around 20 hectares under vine, now farmed organically.
SRH carries the initials of the founder, Stuart Reginald Hooper, and comes from a twelve row selection within the Olive Tree Hill vineyard, planted in 1976 and among the oldest Chardonnay on the property. Those old vines yield very little, which concentrates the fruit before it is fermented and raised in French oak barrels with extended time on lees.
This is a powerful and tightly structured Chardonnay. White peach, grapefruit and lemon pith come with struck match, toasted hazelnut and a chalky mineral core, and the texture is creamy but taut. It is built to age, gaining honeyed richness over five to ten years while keeping its line of acidity.
