Ata Rangi was founded in 1980, when Clive Paton planted Pinot Noir on five stony hectares of former sheep paddock at the edge of Martinborough. The name means new beginning, and the estate is now one of the defining names in New Zealand Pinot Noir, farming its home vineyards organically since 2014.
The Masters vineyard lies further south on Lake Ferry Road, where cooler conditions and deeper soils shape a noticeably different wine. This is the taut, savoury member of the single vineyard range, with genuine mineral drive: darker berry fruit, dried herbs and an iron-like undertow, structured and firm rather than immediately charming. Kōtinga and Masters joined McCrone in the single vineyard lineup from 2020.
Serve it with lamb, beef, game or aged cheese. Decant it if you are opening it young, and give it several years in the cellar if you can.
