Ata Rangi was founded in 1980 by Clive Paton, who planted Pinot Noir on five stony hectares at the edge of Martinborough when almost nobody thought it was a good idea. The name means new beginning, and four decades on the estate sits at the very top of New Zealand Pinot Noir, with its home vineyards certified organic since 2014.
Kōtinga is the most free draining of the estate's single vineyard sites, planted on alluvial gravels with no clay influence at all and set to a selection of Dijon Pinot Noir clones. The wine is raised in a large 2,280 litre foudre rather than small barrels, a deliberate choice to preserve the bright, crunchy character that this site delivers.
The result is the most energetic of the estate's single vineyard reds, full of red cherry, cranberry and spice, with fine tannins and a lifted, transparent finish. Serve it with roast poultry, salmon, charcuterie or lighter red meat, and do not be afraid to give it a light chill on a warm day.
