From Domaine Yves Cuilleron, a benchmark Northern Rhône producer based in Chavanay, founded by his grandfather in 1920 and run by Yves since 1987. The estate is among the most respected names in the appellations of Condrieu, Côte-Rôtie, Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, Saint-Péray and Cornas.
100% Syrah from a 2-hectare plot called 'Malfondière' in the southern part of Tain-l'Hermitage. 'Labaya' (formerly 'Laya') is an old local name for an area within the appellation. The soils are deep, stony, sandy loam. Expect a richly aromatic Crozes with ripe black fruit, black olive, pepper, violet and savoury, meaty notes, leading into a full-bodied, fleshy palate with ripe acidity and balanced structure.
Hand-picked, sorted, crushed and fully de-stemmed before fermentation in open-top, temperature-controlled vats for around three weeks, with regular cap-punching and pump-overs. Native-yeast fermentation, with malolactic conversion in barrel, followed by around 16 months of aging in oak.
