Pierre Girardin Le Montrachet Grand Cru 2023 750ml

Le Montrachet is the most celebrated white wine vineyard on earth, a strip of barely eight hectares straddling the boundary between Puligny and Chassagne, set mid-slope where the exposure, drainage and shallow limestone soils combine in a way no neighbouring site quite matches. Holdings are measured in rows rather than hectares and production is tiny, which is why bottles appear so rarely.

Everything here operates on a larger scale than the wines around it. The aromatics move from lemon oil, white peach and acacia through to hazelnut, honey and a deep mineral undertow, and the palate combines great power with a weightlessness that is the vineyard's real signature, holding an extraordinarily long finish. It is a wine built to be cellared for many years.

Pierre Girardin founded his estate at Meursault in 2016, the thirteenth generation of a winemaking family and son of Vincent Girardin. His approach is deliberately unshowy, with natural fermentations and ageing in large 456 litre barrels, on the reasoning that a site of this quality needs no help.
