Pappy Van Winkle 23 Year Old Family Reserve 750ml

Pappy Van Winkle's Family Reserve 23 Year Old is the oldest and rarest release in the Van Winkle line, drawn from a tiny number of wheated bourbon barrels at Buffalo Trace that have rested for more than two decades. At this age the wheat-led mash bill is fully expressed, lending a richness and softness that allows the long oak influence to remain elegant rather than overpowering.

In the glass it shows a deep, polished amber. The nose is layered and quietly powerful, with caramel and cream meeting soft oak, toasted nuts and a touch of leather. The palate moves through vanilla, maple, honey and dried citrus into ripe apple, cherry and dark chocolate, with tobacco and antique oak weaving across the finish.

The texture is full and almost syrupy, drying slowly into a long, spice-led conclusion that lingers with charred wood and old leather. A bourbon at the very edge of how far Kentucky maturation can be pushed without losing balance.
