Iraun is a distinctive white wine from Oxer Bastegieta, a small natural wine producer working organically in Spain's Rioja region. The name comes from the Basque language and means "to endure", a nod to the winemaker's roots and to the venerable old vines behind the wine.
Grown in calcareous clay soils on a vineyard well over a century old, it is a field blend led by Viura alongside traditional Rioja white varieties such as Garnacha Blanca, Malvasia and Maturana Blanca. Fermentation begins with native yeasts in stainless steel and finishes in amphora and large used French oak, followed by around a year of ageing and bottling without filtration.
The result is a textural, characterful white with concentrated aromas of ripe white peach and yellow plum, layered with sweet spice, almond, fennel and delicate yellow flowers. It is a wine of real personality that suits the table.
