Fonseca Bin No. 27 is one of the most recognised names in Port. Long enjoyed privately by the Fonseca family, it was released commercially in Great Britain in 1972, and its name follows the old cellar tradition of identifying wines by the bin in which they were stored.
It is a blend of reserve wines from different lots, sourced from the Cima Corgo and Douro Superior in Portugal's Douro Valley. Some of the fruit comes from Fonseca's own estates and the rest from trusted independent growers. The wines are aged in large oak vats for around four years before blending and bottling, giving a consistent, ready-to-drink style from bottling to bottling.
In the glass it shows a deep, youthful ruby colour. The nose is rich with blackberry, cassis, cherry, plum and spice, leading to a round, velvety palate supported by firm tannins and a finish of juicy black fruit.
Fonseca recommends serving it at 16 to 18°C with no need to decant, and suggests pairing it with a good farmhouse cheddar or desserts made with dark chocolate or berry fruits.
