Domaine Faiveley has been based at Nuits-Saint-Georges since Pierre Faiveley founded the house in 1825, and the seventh generation, Erwan and Eve Faiveley, runs it today. Les Montroziers is the domaine's village bottling from its home appellation, named in honour of Maurice Colrat de Montrozier, a French statesman and great uncle of Guy and Yvonne Faiveley.
The cuvée draws on four hectares of parcels spread from the north to the south of Nuits-Saint-Georges and from the foot of the slope to the top. The very pebbly Argillats brings delicate aromatics, while the flatter Lavières, on marl, silt and hard limestone, supplies concentration and depth. It spends fourteen months in French oak with a fifth of the barrels new, chosen for fine grain and moderate toast so the wood stays in the background.
Expect sweet raspberry, plum and peony on the nose, then a round, full attack, velvety tannins and a lively core of fruit carried by fresh acidity. Serve it with roast lamb, beef, duck or hard cheeses, and give it a decant if you open it young.
