Domaine Denis Mortet is one of the benchmark estates of Gevrey-Chambertin in the Cote de Nuits, celebrated for its meticulous, expressive Pinot Noir. The Bourgogne Rouge Cuvee de Noble Souche is the domaine's entry into red Burgundy, drawn from a parcel planted at relatively high altitude near the village of Daix, north of Dijon. The cooler, elevated site ripens its fruit more slowly than the estate's other holdings, lending the wine a welcome freshness.
Made entirely from Pinot Noir, it is generous yet finely drawn, offering pretty red berry fruit, supple texture and silky tannins. The cooler microclimate gives lift and balance, so the wine feels bright and energetic alongside its ripe, gentle fruit.
Serve lightly chilled to cool room temperature with charcuterie, roast pork, grilled mushrooms or a simple roast chicken.
