This is the estate's principal red, a Grenache-led blend rounded out with Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault and small amounts of the older permitted varieties Vaccarèse and Muscardin. Around 60 per cent of the fruit comes from La Crau, the plateau of iron-rich red clay covered in the big rounded galets that Châteauneuf is famous for, with the balance drawn from the alluvial clay and sandy soils below it.
The nose is generous and warm, with ripe black cherry, kirsch and plum over garrigue herbs, black pepper and a note of sweet spice. The palate is full and richly fruited in the modern Châteauneuf manner, with plush tannins, real depth through the middle and a long, savoury finish carrying the stony warmth of the plateau.
Clos Saint Jean is a 41 hectare estate run by brothers Vincent and Pascal Maurel. The cellar is among the oldest in the appellation, founded in 1900 by their great-great-grandfather Edmund Tacussel, who began bottling wine from the property in 1910.
