Clarendon Hills was founded in 1990 by biochemist Roman Bratasiuk and has built its reputation on single-vineyard wines from old, dry-grown vines in McLaren Vale. Romas is its flagship Grenache, drawn from a gnarly patch of low-yielding bush vines tucked away in the upper reaches of Blewitt Springs.
The Romas block occupies the steepest and stoniest part of the estate's Blewitt Springs Grenache site, with an easterly aspect and soils rich in ironstone, quartz and shale, carrying less sand than the surrounding vineyard. The fruit is hand-picked and fermented with wild yeast, then matured in French oak of one to five years of age before being bottled at the winery without fining or filtration.
Romas is known for its perfumed, finely boned style, with aromas of roses, musk, raspberry, blueberry and kirsch, framed by mineral notes of crushed rock, flint and graphite. The palate is silky and fine-textured, with bright acidity and a quiet, savoury power.
