Château Pape Clément lies in the Bordeaux suburb of Pessac and is among the oldest wine estates in the region, with a documented harvest as far back as 1252. It takes its name from Bertrand de Goth, who owned the property before being elected Pope Clement V in 1305, and it has been directed by Bernard Magrez since 1985.
The white is made in small volumes from Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon with a little Muscadelle and Sauvignon Gris, grown on the old Pyrenean gravel terraces that give the estate its name for terroir. The fruit is picked in successive passes, fermented in barrel and raised on its lees with regular stirring.
It is one of the richest of the Pessac-Léognan whites: citrus, white peach and quince with honeysuckle, toasted nuts and a smoky mineral edge, full bodied and creamy in texture yet kept fresh by firm acidity. It drinks well young and develops in bottle over many years.
