Château Margaux Margaux 2015 750ml

Château Margaux is a First Growth of the 1855 Classification and the most celebrated estate of the commune whose name it carries. The property runs to 262 hectares at Margaux-Cantenac, of which around 80 are planted to vines on the fine gravel banks of the left bank, and it has been in the hands of the Mentzelopoulos family since 1977.

Plantings are roughly 75 per cent Cabernet Sauvignon and 20 per cent Merlot, with small parcels of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, alongside a separate block of Sauvignon Blanc for the estate's white wine. The grand vin is a strict selection from the oldest and best sited plots, matured in new French oak barrels made at the château's own cooperage.

Margaux is the most perfumed of the First Growths. Violets and dark berry fruit lead into cedar, graphite and fine spice, while the palate is built on silky, tightly drawn tannins that carry a long, gently floral finish. This is a wine of finesse rather than force, and the best years hold for decades.

Fruit that does not make the selection goes into Pavillon Rouge, the oldest second wine in the Médoc, and into Margaux du Château Margaux.
